P is for Picard

I Love Sci-Fi/Fantasy Because...

...of Star Trek's Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Patrick Stewart is a top-notch actor and did an excellent job of making Captain Picard a top-notch character.

Picard and Kirk were so different in so many ways, yet they both have dedicated fans and admirers. And many who admire one, admire them both.

Picard's refined sophistication was always being put to the test, whether he was dodging Lwaxana Troi, taking a holiday on Risa or bemoaning the fact that Starfleet allows children on Galaxy class starships.

As Locutus, he made a convincing borg. He was an entertaining Robin Hood and a rather cool kid in the Rascals episode.

He was quicker to talk his way out of a fight than throw a punch, but he held his own when punches were necessary. Any man who can impress a Klingon is okay in my book.

Captain Picard is one of the reasons I love science fiction and fantasy.

And a brief little clip showing what Picard loved most

  1. I loved Picard although Kirk was such a classic character, Picard just really brought it to life being a captain of a starship

    1. There is the whole three versus seven year aspect to take into consideration too. I wonder how (or if) Kirk would have changed had he been given four more seasons.

    1. I hope Patrick reads my blog one day, sees this and replies. :) That would be so cool.

  4. Picard is a classy bloke. I'd have to be a Picard kind of girl. Kirk is cool, but I'd never date him. Hard to tell what sorts of intergallactic STD's he'd be carrying!

    1. They were all great in their own way. But I cannot disagree with you.

  6. Stewart was legendary in this role. I hadn't seen much of him before Next Gen, but he really impressed me.

  10. To tell the truth, I didn't like Picard at first. He seemed rather petulant at times - at least for the first half of the first season. Things got better after that. Turns out that Picard's style was more of what Gene Roddenberry had in mind for the captain of the Enterprise back at the very beginning.

    1. The entire first season was a bit incongruous. It took them a while to settle into their characters...even to decide if Data was a mechanical android versus synthetic human. And the whole can't use contractions wasn't until we met Lore.
