R is for Ellen Ripley

I Love Sci-Fi/Fantasy Because...
...of Ellen Ripley.

If ever I need a woman to come to my rescue, this is who I hope shows up.

Save me next, Ripley!
Who can forget the moment in Aliens just after she found Newt and that egg opened up. That tilt of her head that told the queen, "It's on!"

Aliens was the only movie of this type that really stayed with me for a few days after watching it the first time. The first movie (Alien) was okay and I liked Alien 3 as well, but Aliens was the best.

The creatures introduced in this series were the most unique aliens to enter the mainstream in a very long time. They were virtually unstoppable--at least until they met Ripley.

Sigourney Weaver was arguably at her best in this role. (I loved her in Galaxy Quest too, but that's a post for another time.) She's a talented actress and a credit to her profession.

Sigourney's role as Ellen Ripley is one reason I love science fiction and fantasy.

  1. I love Ripley. She was such an amazing character that had real depth to her, not seen much in action hero types especially females. Sigourney Weaver is such a brilliant actress. Aliens was my favorite of the franchise too.

    Excellent post.

  3. Agree with Rachna. Ripley is a badass woman. Sigourney Weaver knows how to become the character she plays. She also did an excellent job in Avatar.

  4. Aliens was the best! Cameron turned it into one heck of a roller coaster ride. And of course Ripley had one of the best lines of the movie, which I won't repeat here.

  5. She definitely held and kept my interest in that movie, that's for sure. She opened a giant can of alien whoop. I will never forget how she looked in that scene either. I would not have wanted to mess with her.

And I am in agreement, I think the first Alien was the best.

  6. I remember seeing Sigourney Weaver in Avatar and feeling relieved that she was friends with the aliens this time around.

  7. Ripley is the mother of all female sci-fi badasses. She inspired other great characters like Sarah Connor. She is one of the best characters ever written.

    I wrote about her too:
