E is for Eragon

I Love Sci-Fi/Fantasy Because...
...of Eragon, the first book in the Inheritance Cycle.

I suppose that in truth, this post is as much about Christopher Paolini as it is about Eragon itself.

Christopher Paolini is, to me, an inspiration.  He was born less than a year before I married Myra.  And before my children were out of school, Eragon had been self-published.

It didn't remain self-published for long, of course.  Alfred A. Knopf picked it up in 2003 and Paolini--at nineteen--became a New York Times bestselling author.  And then there was the movie made from it as well.

The story tells of a farmboy named Eragon and the bond he shared with the dragon, Saphira. It's a tale of wonder and discovery, of coming of age, and of personal growth.

Eragon--and his creator--is one reason why I love science fiction and fantasy.

  2. I loved Eragon. It was such a good story. I wasn't as big a fan of the later books. I wonder, did the editors polish away his voice? Or was it just me?

  3. I've never read this one. Did they make it into a movie, as well?

  4. I've never read Eragon, but I'm very aware of the back-history with the author and always thought that was inspiring. I really should make an effort to pick up this book sometime!

  5. His story is definitely an inspiration. I couldn't believe it when I heard how old he was when he published. Amazing!

  6. Eragon shows that self-publishing doesn't have to be bad work at all. I have the first two books in the series.

  7. The book is obviously much better than the film - because it was really bad. Every author's nightmare.

  8. It's pretty amazing that he could write and publish it so young. Makes me feel like I've wasted my life since I'm quickly approaching forty and am still not published.

  12. I love the books and I like the film (though you should not compare it to the book) and I met Christopher last year on his tour and he was so incredible nice! He light not be the greatest Fantasy author, but he is a lot more inspiring to me than some of those great authors.
