And I decided to participate. A true countdown requires ranking, but I cannot, in all fairness, truly rank these. The rankings would change with the wind. These are ten OF my favorites today. Listed in no particular order, they are...
Lord of the Rings trilogy (duh!)
The Two Towers was my favorite movie, but the Mines of Moria was my favorite scene.
Star Trek (the entire gambit)
But nobody does bad as good as Ricardo Montalban does.
Star Wars (yeah, all six!)
Let's hear it for the Wookie!!
The Avengers
I don't believe they could have done a better job with this movie.
Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars
I cannot tell you how many times I've watched this. I so miss the series.
Serenity (The Firefly movie)
From a series that died before its time. Not shiny!
Merlin
Several Merlin/Camelot adaptations vied for this slot; Sam Neill's portrayal won.
The Bourne Series (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum)
Not Sci-Fi/Fantasy, but close enough. My favorite changes with time.
A Knight's Tale
This one starred an actor that died before his time.
The Sixth Sense
The best thing (IMHO) Bruce did after Moonlighting.
I have watched these movies so many times. I can quote way too much from way too many of them, and there is much within them worth quoting.
Any of these make your Top Ten list?
A lot of the movies are on my own top ten list (and I'm pretty sure by now that I can recite Serenity)
ReplyDeleteI talked about my love for the Bourne movies last week because there were too many movies for me to limit this blogfest to one post.
Serenity was a great one. People often complain about "wrap up" movies at the end of a series. (I've heard this complaint around Farscape's.) But Serenity was so so so good. It was a perfect wrap up to Firefly.
DeleteI haven't seen any of these movies! *shifty eyes* I remember wanting to see The Sixth Sense back in the day, but then my sister spoiled the twist for me, so that killed my interest...
ReplyDelete*ANY*??? At all?? May I book your next 72 hours? I'll forgive the Sixth Sense since knowing the twist would spoil a first viewing, but you've GOT to see some of these others.
DeleteHeh, I know. I'm such a terrible movie-watcher! *shifty eyes*
DeleteI'm afraid Wrath of Khan mostly stuck in my head because of the ear critters. Nightmares! But I saw it as a kid. I need to watch it as an adult, but have a knee jerk reaction to it when I see it (and the urge to cover my ears, haha!).
ReplyDeleteI quote A Knight's Tale all the time. Love that movie! And, of course, many of your others are movies I love, too.
Shannon at The Warrior Muse
My wife would leave the room when that WoK scene played, not because of the scene, but because I'd quote the entire thing in unison with Khan. Just couldn't help myself. (Still can't.)
DeleteHa! Well, maybe that would actually get me through it, because I'd be distracted just enough.
DeleteMerlin, great choice... there was a sequel, may I suggest you skim the first part and enjoy the second half...
ReplyDeleteJeremy [Retro-Z]
Howlin' Wolf
"Merlin's Apprentice"? I saw that. Enjoyed it too.
DeleteClassics all of them. Wrath of Khan freaks me out though. I still can't see an earwig without thinking of it and freaking out though.
ReplyDeleteBut those were pets, Sara. And they were the only remaining indigenous life form on Ceti Alpa Five, thereby warranting a place on the endangered species list. :)
DeleteYour list just rocks! Didn't even think about Farscape. (Or the SG1 movies.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating in my blogfest!
Yours isn't so bad either, Alex. And thanks for hosting a fun blogfest!
DeleteBrilliant choices! LOTR and Star Wars made my list, too. :)
ReplyDeleteMy opinion, Emma, is that they should make everyone's list! LOL
DeleteIt is so hard to pick! Great job here. Star Wars is #1 on my list. But I really wanted to make it a tie between Star Wars and Lord Of the Rings Trilogy. Love them both so much!
ReplyDeleteIt is difficult to choose. Had I given more thought and had more room I'd have included movies like "The Color Purple" or "The Little Mermaid" that I've watched so many times and loved for so many different reasons.
DeleteSuperb movies on your list there :). I love all of the LotR movies for different reasons; each one has something that drags me in. A little while back my husband and I decided to have a rewatch few days where we dragged one out every evening and watched the extended versions.
ReplyDeleteStar Wars is also a fabulous franchise, but I have to disagree with you on all six - I'm old school when it comes to Star Wars :).
All the others you have listed are wonderful too, great list.
It sounds as though Star Wars for me is like LoTR for you. I like different things about each of them. I'm glad though that they didn't try to make epsidoes 1-3 in the early days. The special effects just weren't available to do the scenes justice. The effects weren't as necessary in the latter three episodes, despite the fact that they were groundbreaking at the time.
DeleteNice to see somebody else who enjoys A Knight's Tale in all it anachronistic glory!
ReplyDeleteI missed having any Trek on my list, probably because the cinematic reboot left me with such a sense of blah. If I were to rethink it, though, Wrath of Khan would definitely make the list.
"A Knight's Tale" appears to be far more popular than I suspected! I'm still a bit torn on the latest Trek incarnation, but you've got to admit that Quinto plays a pretty good Spock.
DeleteFabulous list, Jeff! A Knight's Tale is one of my faves, though it didn't make my list. I also had Star Wars and a Stark Trek movie, though it was TNG. It's been years since I watched WoK, and I should watch again before Into Darkness comes out. I've heard Benedict Cumberpatch's character in the new film either is Khan or is based on him, so I should really brush up on mythology. Dontcha just love scifi films? :D
ReplyDeleteMy List Here.
I've heard the same thing about "Star Trek Into Darkness" and that it could also be Gary Mitchell from the "Where No Man Has Gone Before" episode. I'd much prefer it be about Mitchell. I don't want Khan spoiled.
DeleteKnight's Tale was almost on my list, but I thought of it too late and didn't want to re-alphabetize
ReplyDeleteI've seen it show up on some other lists--much to my surprise. I didn't know it so "univerally" liked.
DeleteSome great picks there and, you're right, no one does 'bad' as good as Ricardo Montelban...."Khannnnnn!!" :)
ReplyDeleteHe did it so well that I forsook good grammar to drive home the point! Marvelous character. Marvelous actor. Marvelous movie.
DeleteKHAN! Sorry, had to say it. Great list, Jeff. And I have mad love for Sixth Sense. :)
ReplyDeleteIs there a better one word movie quote than "KHAN!"?? I'm glad I didn't guess the twist in Sixth Sense before it happened. The twist made it perfect.
DeleteI like so many on this list. And I agree with you about a A Knight's Tale, ): Haven't seen Merlin though . . .
ReplyDeleteI'd have to check the stats, but Merlin "felt" like a long movie. I chronicles a few generations and (as with all Camelot adaptations) takes a few liberties, but it was a most enjoyable movie.
DeleteAnd Heath Ledger is one of the few Hollywood actors I've truly mourned. I loved him in everything he played. Died far too young.
Ricardo Montalban was an extraordinary actor and Mother DRagon had a crush on him hahahaha. Merlin was superb. I saw it in Hallmark Channel back in the day the cave had cable. Good choices.
ReplyDeleteWell, I hope Mother Dragon had the opportunity to visit Ricardo at Fantasy Island. The man did have panache.
DeleteThe Sixth Sense is a breathtaking movie...actually the only movie I loved with Bruno :)>
ReplyDeleteYeah, once the twist became apparent, I immediately had to watch it again and look for tells or inconsistencies. (I watched it first on video.)
DeleteHey Jeff, nice to meet you. another great list. I can't elieve I forgot 'A Knights Tale' Great movie, awesome soundtrack.
ReplyDeleteSame here! After making the rounds today, I noticed there were a few I had forgotten as well: The Color Purple, Wizard of Oz, Aliens, etc. So many good ones.
DeleteFarscape and Merlin (and so many of the others, too)! I love this list!
ReplyDeleteI could be content stranded someplace with just this list to watch. :)
DeleteOh, good choices! Wrath of Kahn totally rocked. I'm also glad Serenity is making so many lists.
ReplyDeleteEveryone's favorite Trek seems to either be The Voyage Home or Wrath of Khan. Each edges the other depending on criteria. I was quite surprised to see Serenity everywhere.
DeleteMerlin was great, the sequel to it wasn't all that bad either. Enjoyed all on your list, well only 3 of the 6 star wars movies that is.
ReplyDeleteLOL. There is much debate on episodes 1-3, for sure. :)
DeleteI actually love all of these movies, funny that none of our overlapped :)
ReplyDeleteToo funny! Then our lists complement each other?
DeleteYou mentioned you hadn't seen many of the films on my list - I haven't seen many of yours, either. So, maybe we call it even? :)
ReplyDeleteI do LOVE LOTR and The Avengers, though!
Even it is. :)
DeleteGreat choices! Love LOTR and Avengers!
ReplyDeleteProof of your excellent taste in entertainment. ;-)
DeleteKhan was cool. I think the 4th would be my pick because it had whales.
ReplyDeleteLOTR is always a great selection.
I think the 4th is probably most people's favorite and it's my runner-up choice. I think The Undiscovered Country and First Contact probably tie for third place. :)
DeleteI'm seeing Serenity on a lot of lists. I'm gonna have to see that. :)
ReplyDeleteYes you are! Of course, it's better having seen the series' single season first. I do wish there had been more than one season.
DeleteI can (and do) watch these movies repeatedly.
ReplyDeleteLord of the Rings ... duh! I should have had it on my list. But yay for The Bourne Trilogy. Love those movies!
ReplyDeleteIt's difficult to pull off a virtual non-stop adrenaline rush well in a movie, but they did it three times in the Bourne series.
DeleteYay Star Wars!!! Wookies rock! And A Knight's Tale . . .such a good movie, and I forgot it. Sigh. So many movies, so little time.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. It's a bit sad knowing that I'll never get around to watching/reading some great stuff.
DeleteHey Jeff,
ReplyDeleteHave been working my way through a whole bunch of blogs. And a lot seem to be mentioning movie lists. Now then, at 2:30 A.M, I have finally arrived to leave one of my um eagerly anticipated comments. Yay!
I do like your choices. And no, I'm not going to mention that Tolkien got some of his inspiration for "Middle-earth" from observing the locals in the town I now live. It's a true story and by observing the locals, I can see how he got his inspiration.
Nice one, Jeff!
Gary :)
I must hold in high esteem any place (person or thing) that inspired Tolkien. He enriched our culture with his imagination and dedication.
DeleteTell Penny I loved the poetry. :)
Loved the Avengers as well despite I'm not fond of superheroes. It was EPIC when I saw it in theatres.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing is, I was never overly into comic books growing up, but have loved many of the Marvel (and DC) depictions on screen. And yes, Avengers in the theatre was awesome.
DeleteLOTR is #1 without question. And you've got some other great picks. I almost had Serenity on my list, but it felt lonely without Firefly. And I gotta watch A Knight's Tale someday. I <3 Heath Leger.
ReplyDelete*I* feel lonely without Firefly. :-/ Yes, you've got to watch A Knight's Tale. I truly believe you'd love it.
DeleteI think this would match my hubby's list if her were to do a bloghop. My list is more about silly comedies.
ReplyDeleteRhonda
Laugh-Quotes.com
Then your hubby has good taste! Obviously. :) I do love comedies, but it's anyone's guess what will tickle my funny bone. Even I can't reliably predict. I'd have to go with Galaxy Quest as one of my favorite comedies.
Deletei love all the movies on your list!
ReplyDeleteNutschell
www.thewritingnut.com
What a coincidence, so do I! LOL Actually, ten was just too few. There are so many more I could have added: The Color Purple, Wizard of Oz, even Galaxy Quest!
DeleteKnight's Tale...what a great movie that I've seen time and again. I can't believe I didn't include it on my list (and it fit the theme I had).
ReplyDeleteHindsight is always keener. But you're right; it really is a great one.
DeleteWhat a great list! And I loved Merlin!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what it is about that particular movie that propelled it so high on my list. Maybe the fact that I watch it every few months, I suppose.
DeleteForgot about Knight's Tale! That's a great one! Avengers made a lot of lists for this fest!
ReplyDeleteThere did seem to be a consensus with several movies popping up on one list after another. I was surprised by several of them.
DeleteI included the Bourne movies too and I also loved Knight's Tale!
ReplyDeleteAll very good movies indeed. Damon was a perfect choice for Bourne.
DeleteWell, I have no arguement with your choices but I think listing a whole series as one movie is fudging a bit.
ReplyDeleteReally, nice list.
Rules, like records, were made to be broken. (yes?) There would have been nothing but Rings and Trek had I listed them without grouping. So many worthy of inclusion, but so few slots to hold them.
DeleteHave watched almost all of these. Great list!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I've enjoyed watching them all many times.
DeleteI've seen Serenity and the Bourne movies on a lot of lists but not seen them. I'll have to change that.
ReplyDeleteWell, since they're on my top ten list, you know I recommend them. ;-) But I recommend watching Serenity after watching the Firefly series.
DeleteWow! I wish I'd seen this "challenge" earlier; I'd have taken part. I dig your picks.
ReplyDeleteJust took a peek at yours. Glad you joined in--even if a day or two late.
DeleteLord of the Ring, Avengers and Star War? This is officially an awesomed list. I didn't end up putting eith the Lord of the Rings or Star Wars on my list, but that's because I ran outta room!
ReplyDeleteAnd I officially agree. As was pointed out, though, I kinda cheated by lumping series and trilogies together whenever possible. :)
DeleteGreat list. I too love fantasy.
ReplyDeleteAh, but Michael, all of us with impeccable taste love fantasy. It's a requirement for being super awesome. ;-)
DeleteJust dropping in from the blog hop to say you've got a great list! LotR's on mine, but I also have much love for "Farscape" and "A Knight's Tale". :3
ReplyDeleteYeah, I had to watch "A Knight's Tale" again after listing it and then commenting about it, realizing it had been a few months since I'd last seen it. I love it every time I watch it.
Delete
