I Hear Fictional People

I have this little problem.  Sometimes I feel like Cole Sear.  He heard dead people.  I don't.  I hear worse.  Let me tell you about it

I don't know if I should tell him.  I almost told him last time.  I'm not a normal boy.  I hear fictional people.  They talk to me, want me to do things. They don't know they're fictional.

This is my dilemma.  I've been this way a long time.  I try to be brave because it can be scary sometimes.

But sometimes I like it.

Should I tell him?  The doctor already thinks I'm crazy.  He just wants me to pay him to tell me so.  Must have something to do with all those diplomas, certificates and degrees in pretty, wooden frames hanging on his wall.  I suppose he feels entitled.

I bet he doesn't hear them.  He listens to real people.  Real people like me.  People who hear fictional people.

Sometimes I write down what they say.  They don't care.  I think they like it.  It makes them feel interesting.  Like people want to know what they have to say.  People who can't hear them for themselves.  People who have to hear it from people like me.

The doctor says he can make them go away.  Give me pills to make them stop.  I don't know why he says that.  He doesn't believe they're even there.  I like the fictional people.  They like to talk to me.  And I like to listen to what they say.

But sometimes they scare me.  They want me to write down the bad things they do, the mean thoughts they think and the bad words they say.  I don't know why they want real people to know.  But real people do want to know.  Sometimes real people scare me too.

But I like it when they make me laugh.  They do that sometimes.  They're funny when they want to be.  And I like to write those things down.

Yes, I hear fictional people.  Can't you hear them too?

(This is what happens when the muse wakes me up in the middle of the night and won't let me go back to sleep.  Spooky, huh?)

  1. Yeah, that is kinda spooky. But, it's perfectly normal for a writer to hear those voices. Ack! Did I just admit I hear them too? Oh-oh, I think I did. Scratch that. My muse got away from me! LOL

    1. I'm calling the inquisitors right now, Jack. Your confession has been been found and deemed genuine. Only your muse can save you now.

  2. Hands down, one of the creepiest posts I've ever read! But yes, I hear them too - usually in the middle of night when I want to be asleep! :D

    1. Not quite sure how to take that, Kyra. :-) And I had just recently commented that my muse never wakes me in the middle of the night. I think it just happened and she took advantage of me.

  3. Is it really wrong that I can so perfectly relate to this, Jeff? Oh, you have no idea how much! :-o

Thanks so much for your kind comment.

  5. I only hear them at night when I am trying to sleep and don't care what they say. So glad to hear that I am not the only one!

    1. If we be insane, let us be insane as one. In unity we'll travel to the bin called looney.

    1. Tell you what Richard, when Miss Muse visits next at 2am I'll forward her to your address. How's that? :-)

  8. I hear them too and I'm thinking of finding a pill that helps me hear them more! We are a unique lot, us writers, don't you think? :-)

    1. There he was again. Fictional. Real. Here. And offering me a bottle of some pasty white liquid. "Milk of Muse," he whispered.
      "What's that?"
"Just a concoction. A little mixture to stir the creative juices."
      "Looks yucky! What's in it?"
"Not much," he replied. "A dash of nightmare, spoonful or two of unexpected, a pinch of peril, sprinkles of subtleties. It'll do you wonders. I promise."
I consider a swallow, but the stuff is just rank. "Can I get it in an extended-release pill?"

  9. That movie scared me to death as a little kid. I just watched it again last Halloween, I think, and I remember loving it because, over the past couple of years, horror movies have become my favorite. Not slasher, just horror.

I liked the little metaphor you used to create this post, though. I found that really clever.

    1. Thanks Matt! I never watched "The Sixth Sense" until came out on video. I guess it made an impact. Excellent movie.

Horror is *very* hit and miss with me. I'm not a fan of slasher either, but sometimes there will be a movie that I like. Of course, back in the day when I was dating (and there were drive-in theaters) horror flicks were first choice to take the dates. There I'd be all ready to hold and comfort my poor frightened date when the Bogey Man lept out from nowhere. :-)
