I Love Sci-Fi/Fantasy Because... |
...of Firefly.
I almost went with the Force from Star Wars here, but chose Firefly instead. Firefly took science fiction in a direction it doesn't often go: a wild wild west frontier-esque direction.
The cast of characters were distinctly unique, interesting and ever-so-entertaining. They were a band of misfits scraping out a living by taking one shady job after the next. A little smuggling here. A heist there. Scavenging and calling it salvaging. And they did so all from the comfort of an antiquated ship always on the verge of falling apart.
Murphy wrote his famous law after watching this show. The show lasted a single season and was wrapped up in Serenity, one of my favorite movies.
Firefly, with its fresh take and distinctive flavor is one reason I love science fiction and fantasy.
I only saw the movie but heard the Firefly was a great series.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely was.
DeleteFirefly has such a strong fan base, even after all these years. That's quality for you!
ReplyDeleteI guess that is the measure of what is good.
DeleteI've only heard of Firefly in conjunction with Joss Whedon, but it sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteOddly enough, from just the description, it doesn't sound like something that would have been up my alley.
DeleteNever seen this, but I think I'm going to watch it soon :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think you'll regret it.
DeleteFirefly came out around the time I moved to France so I missed out on the series. However, I recently watched Serenity and thought it was fantastic. It's too bad they didn't continue the series or make another movie.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but a follow-up movie after killing off Wash would have just been wrong. :)
DeleteI've always heard such great things about Firefly. It's streamable on Netflix, now we just need to find time to watch it.
ReplyDeleteMy recommendation is find the time. ;-)
Deleteone of my FAVORITE shows, ever. Hi Jeff :)
ReplyDeleteShiny!
DeleteWhat does that make us?
ReplyDeleteBig damn heroes sir.
Ain't we just.
I love me some firefly!
The most unique dialog I've ever heard in sci-fi.
DeleteCan't pick Star Wars over Firefly! Best TV show ever. True space opera style.
ReplyDeleteWith that cast of characters, it had to be nothing less than awesome.
DeleteI loved this show and thought it was all kinds of original. Of course, that meant they just -had- cancel it.
ReplyDeleteThe Fox network isn't the brightest when it comes to t.v. shows....
That does seem to be the way of things. The show's popular? Oh, we must cancel it then!
DeleteExcellent choice for F. I adore Firefly. It really is tragic that it only got one season. Serenity was pretty cool, too, and definitely helped give a little closure.
ReplyDeleteYes, and it was definitely closure. Offing Shepherd and Wash pretty much guaranteed there would be no sequel.
DeleteLOVED Firefly!!! The run was definitely too short. So many great sci-fi shows have had such a short run on TV of the past few years. Battlestar, SGU, SGA, Farscape, etc... At least Eureka had a decent run. Great post!!

I wholeheartedly agree.
DeleteFirefly has a lot of fans! Especially in the writing world. We have a silent auction at the conference each year, and if we get anything with Firefly or Serenity on it, it has tons of bids. Great show! For me, I wasn't much into sci-fi, but I loved that it was the Wild West in space. Phenomenal.

Drop the right characters in the right setting with the right directors and you've got a fine piece of work.
DeleteI remember when Firefly was on the air, but I only saw one episode of it. Then several years later I watched all the episodes and Serenity on Netflix streaming. It was a good show that never got the audience it deserved until it was too late.
ReplyDeleteI often wonder why sci-fi fans don't gravitate to some of these shows while they're running. Too many folks appreciate too many shows too late, it seems.
DeleteI don't think that show ever got here. :(
ReplyDeleteIt may not have. I'd be curious as to how well the dialog would translate. I don't see how the richness and flavor would survive translation, but you never know.
DeleteI loved, loved, loved Firefly. I will never forgive Fox for cancelling this show. How could they not see how brilliant it was?
ReplyDeleteIt seems television often doesn't appreciate what a dedicated fan base can do for a show if they just give it time.
DeleteDude, I've never heard of that show. I don't think we got it in Britain. Still, it's an interesting premise.
ReplyDeleteHappy alphabeting, Jeff.
Gary :)
It's a shame if it didn't run over there. We get some stuff that airs first across the pond, like Merlin for example. I sometimes wonder if it works in reverse or if we just create parallels like with Idol/Talent or Being Human.
DeleteJoss Whedon is a GENIUS!
ReplyDeleteI cannot disagree with that.
DeleteI'm a huge Joss Whedon, but still haven't had the chance to see this series... *shame shame shame*
ReplyDeleteUm, I'm a Joss Whedon FAN. *bad typo is bad*
DeleteI actually read "fan" the first time. Funny how our brains can fill in the missing pieces without skipping a beat. If you get the chance to watch it, you may well like it.
