A is for Aragorn

I Love Sci-Fi/Fantasy Because...

...of characters like Lord of the Rings' Aragorn, son of Arathorn.

Tolkien introduced him to us as Strider, a Ranger of the North.  Only later did we learn that he was the heir of Isildur and rightful claimant to the thrones of Arnor and Gondor.

He was human and doubted his ability to prevail.  It was his ancestor that chose not to destroy the One Ring when the opportunity to do so presented itself.  That history gave him pause and caused him to doubt his own resolve.  "That same blood flows through my veins. That same weakness," he said.

But his resolve held true and his honor remained in tact.

This was no mere Ranger of the North.  Elrond's daughter, Arwen, chose a mortal life to marry him.  He returned as king and united Arnor and Gondor.  And his character is one reason why I love science fiction and fantasy.

And... A is also for Arlee, as in Arlee Bird from Tossing It Out.  All A to Z Challenge participants owe the prompting of their next thirty or so posts to him, seeing as how he created the challenge.  Thanks Arlee!  A is for you!

  4. Best A EVER!!

It's the little details I like finding out. It is mentioned in the extended version of The Two Towers movie, and obviously the books, about Aragorn's age. He is in his 80s! Damn fine looking man, I must say!

  6. I know pretty much nothing about Lord of the Rings, but based off your description of Aragorn, I can see why you like this character so much!

  11. One of the best fantasy characters ever created. What guy doesn't want to be Aragorn?

  12. A is most definitely for Aragorn! I did a favorite-male-fictional-characters theme last year, and A was for Aragorn on my blog. I do have to say that the Viggo Mortensen version of Aragorn is a pretty important reason for that, for me.

  13. I like Aragorn too. A very good friend and good man and a good warrior. Women only wish he would bath more often but the stubble is a hit, so I've heard.

  14. Agreed, Jeff! Aragorn is one my favorites as well. A is also for Awesome, because he is! I love the device Tolkien used of introducing him as a dangerous, mysterious figure who happens to want to help Frodo. Once we know and love him, then we learn more about his past--and by default, his destiny--and love him even more! Yup, Tolkien was a genius. :D Great post!

  19. Huh? You start with the letter "A", eh? :)

Let me tell you I'm liking your theme. Aragorn was based on one of the locals in my town. Okay, I made that up. But it is true that Tolkien got a lot of inspiration from the locals when he stayed in Leek, Staffordshire.

    Enjoy the amazing alphabet challenge.

  24. Hey Jeff! Yep Aragorn is an awesome character, trumped only by the faithful and strong Samwise Gamgee IMO. And Viggo nailed the part in the films.

  26. There is something about Viggo Mortenson...But I agree with Father Dragon about his character needing a bath!

  29. Oh my yes. I'm rereading LOTR at the moment and am just past the part where Eowyn sees him for the first time. Also love that image of him stretched out at the gates of Isengard, smoking, talking with the other companions.

    And yay for Arlee!

  31. Perhaps I should change my "V" post to Viggo Mortensen. He seems to be as popular (or even more so) than Aragorn. LOL Thanks for the comments, everyone!
